The double Commonwealth Games man will be in charge of a Blues squad that is among 12 teams from seven countries taking part in the event on 16/17 August at the home of English rugby.
The Blues will join Siberia’s RC Enisei, Australia’s NSW Waratahs and USA’s Seattle for their World Club 7s debuts. Also included are newly crowned Premiership champions Gloucester, Buenos Aires and the Vodacom Blue Bulls.
Harlequins, Auckland Sevens, DHL Western Province, New York City 7s and Russian outfit Kuban Krasnodar make up the dozen crack outfits. The Blues are in a Pool with Gloucester Blue Bulls and Buenos Aires.
Groves will be joined by fellow Welsh Commonwealth Games representative Luke Morgan in the Blues squad. Morgan helped the Dragons reach the Premiership Sevens final.
Wales international scrum half Lloyd Williams is named in the squad and there are also call-ups for Simon Humberstone and Rory Watts-Jones.
“It’s a big tournament at Twickenham and we want to perform well as we represent Wales. We have some Wales Sevens experience in our squad and also some very talented youngsters who have shown up well on recent weeks in 7s competition,” said Paul John, Attack Coach at Cardiff Blues and former Wales Sevens boss.
“It is an opportunity for the boys to play even more competitive rugby and get some real conditioning. It is a great chance for us to look at the whole squad over this weekend of rugby.
“It is a little bit of a step into the unknown as we come up against teams like Buenos Aires and Vodacom Blue Bulls on day one. But we want to perform and if we can reproduce the levels of recent weeks we can do well in this tournament.”
