The 23-year-old damaged his medial collateral ligament in the Ospreys’ 39-5 defeat to Saracens last month and is set to miss the first six matches of the new campaign, including the regions’ derby clashes against the Newport Gwent Dragons and Cardiff Blues.
Chris Towers, Medical Performance Manager, said: “Sam damaged his medial collateral ligament against Saracens.
“He has had the required tests and scans, confirming the extent of the problem, and it’s good news in that no surgery is needed.
“He will have to take time to recover and rehab fully, and at this stage we are looking at an eight week recovery period,” explained Towers.
There has also been an update on the progress of Wales prop Ryan Bevington – who has been sidelined since injuring his groin during the Six Nations. The 6ft, 18 stone loose-head was due to return to action after the international competition but a setback has slowed his progress.
The 25-year-old Bevington penned a new two-year-deal at the Ospreys back in March but is struggling with the injury he suffered six months ago.
“Ryan has suffered a setback in his recovery and at the moment it’s not possible to put an accurate time-scale on his return to play,” said Towers. “We have sought a second opinion, and will continue with an intensive treatment and rehab programme with a viewing to getting him back on the field at the earliest opportunity.”
