The visit from the Wales assistant coach was organised by local businessman Gary Evans and was part of fundraising activity for an educational fund to be accessed by the club stalwart’s daughters, Megan and Lowri.
Richards passed away two years ago after a tragic site accident and the training session this week at Parc Lloyd Thomas was the culmination of a host of activity in his memory.
“The last time I was down in Crymych was as a player for Bridgend in around 1994 and the players and staff here are just as passionate here today as they were then,” said Howley, who was helping to prepare the team ahead of their SWALEC Division 1 West opening clash at Carmarthen Athletic this Saturday.
“It’s been fantastic, the desire and attitude is all there and I’m delighted and honoured to be here especially for Megan and Lowri.
“I’m sure that if the players show the application on Saturday that they have here tonight they’ll definitely be coming out winners.”
Clubman Evans says the club have managed to raise over £20,000 for Richards family and he was present at Crymych to see Howley put the players through their paces and to thank him personally for the help he has given the campaign.
“We are here in memory of a very special man, Glyndwr was a big part of the rugby club and a big pal of mine and of many here tonight,” said Evans.
“We have had a charity auction already and we have raised money towards the girls’ educational fund and this evening’s events have topped off the campaign for us.
Llan Wyn Jones, who plays at scrum-half for the Crymych side which hosts Glynneath in their first home match of the season a week on Saturday, added: “I learned a lot from Rob and particularly how important the basics are at whatever level of rugby you play.
“We’ll all be sure now to continue to practice the things Rob has shown us throughout the season.”
Club secretary Gordon Eynon added: “This event has been expertly organised by Gary Evans, a local business man and close friend of Glyndwr’s.
“We are honoured to have welcomed Rob Howley to Clwb Rygbi Crymych in memory of our beloved former coach and captain.”
