Pewtner: Dragons fear no-one in Europe

Newport Gwent Dragons wing Matthew Pewtner says his side will fear no-one as they embark on their European Rugby Challenge Cup journey.

The Rodney Parade region turn their attentions the new-look continental competition this weekend as they travel to French heavyweights Stade Francais.

The Stade Jean Bouin hosts are in red-hot form at the start of their Top 14 season with six wins from nine matches and are unbeaten in the French capital.

But Pewtner is relishing the distraction the Parisian club will provide, after a miserable start to their PRO12 campaign was capped off by a 24-10 defeat at Edinburgh.

He said: “Our coaches have said that they are probably in the top 10 in Europe and it’s exciting to go over there and measure ourselves against them individually and as a team.

“We can go there with no fear, have a go at them and see what we are made of. We have got nothing to lose and just want to get stuck into them.

“We are in a bit of a rut at the moment and it has been a frustrating start to the season but this is a different competition and gives us a chance to build some confidence. We still believe that things will click and when they do we can turn some heads and kick on.”

Pewtner impressed in his first start of the season, as his try briefly gave the Dragons the lead at Murrayfield.
And the Newport born flyer is keen to continue his try-scoring form that could spark a turnaround in the Dragons’ early season fortunes.

He said:  “It’s never nice to lose but I enjoyed getting out there for the first time this season. We have shown with a good team try that we can be exciting with the ball so we just need to keep working hard for each other.”
