Walsh cannot wait for European action

Geraint Walsh is relishing his first taste of European Rugby Challenge Cup action this Saturday afternoon against Grenoble.

Blues start their Challenge Cup assault with a clash against Top14 high-flyers at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park. For Walsh it will be a first taste of European action since his summer move from Pontypridd to a full-time contract with Blues.

And the versatile back – named the Principality Premiership Player-of-the-Year last season after a superb campaign for league and cup winners – is hoping he will be involved as he looks to build on his full debut against Ospreys last weekend.

“It’s exciting to be playing in Europe and first up is a big test. Grenoble are doing pretty well at home and are in the top half of the French table. We need to put them under pressure early on and try and keep on top of them so hopefully we can get the win.

“My first aim here is to nail down a regular spot. In terms of the team, I think we have a good enough squad to challenge in this competition. The aim is to get a win first up on Saturday.”

Walsh made his professional bow in the Blues 26-15 derby defeat to the Ospreys last Sunday.
And having got his first regional action, Walsh is keen to keep on impressing his new coach Mark Hammett.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed the move to Blues. It’s very different from working every day, training twice a week with Ponty and playing on the weekend.

“With a new coach coming in we have all started with a clean slate. Even boys who have been here years and years have to prove themselves. I think it’s good that we all started on a level playing field and we are all trying to impress.”
