Errors cost the Men of Gwent at Rodney Parade, as the clinical Premiership side pounced on every opportunity to extend their unbeaten run to four games. But Jones is hoping his side can turn it around at Kingston Park after Christmas.
He said: “We’re bitterly disappointed, but the result means that we have to go to Newcastle in January and win a game of rugby – which is not out of our reach. But we could have made life a bit more easy for ourselves.
“We have to take it on the chin and move forward, there were a lot of positives there today in our game but we lost control.”
The Rodney Parade region failed to back up their famous 38-22 reversal against Stade Francais in Paris in round one. And Jones was left frustrated after seeing his side pass up a host of try-scoring opportunities, after working so hard to claim the territorial advantage.
He said: “We lost three, five metre line outs and we should be scoring from at least one of those. It was a negative pattern of our play last year but in games like these you have to take your chances.
“I’m a bit numb after that game. I haven’t seen a side of mine make so many line breaks during a game of rugby. We were good for 30 points tonight but individual errors gifted Newcastle 17 points at the start of the first-half.
“You have to give credit to Newcastle, they were well organised and they worked hard for their jersey. But it’s not the result we were hoping for, we’re a group that are trying to grow and we need victories to help that growth.
