Cardiff Blues new recruit Gareth Anscombe is desperate to make an impact as a Blue before dreaming about playing in red.

The Wales qualified junior All Black made his debut for the region last weekend and was the shining light in their 28-13 defeat to Edinburgh at BT Murrayfield.

And while his long-term focus is to muscle his way into Warren Gatland’s Wales plans, he knows he must perform at his new region first.

He said: “I feel it’s a great opportunity here for me and I spoke to a lot of people back home that I trusted and respected before making the decision.

“It’s been well publicised that I can play for Wales, but first things first it’s all about playing well for Cardiff Blues and that is my only focus.

“I guess I’ve come over here earlier than I thought I might have to, but that is sport and about taking opportunities. I’m excited now to be in Cardiff now and looking forward to the challenge ahead of me. It’s a good set-up here at Cardiff Blues with sharp facilities; I’ve been impressed with everything so far.”

Anscombe his set for his BT Sport Arms Park debut this weekend when the Blues welcome Treviso, fresh from their draw with PRO12 champions Leinster. And the 23-year-old is relishing the challenge of acclimatising to northern hemisphere rugby.

He said: “I’m adjusting to the way Blues want to play and the new competitions. I’ve got to make adjustments to my game to make sure I contribute.

“Hammer (Mark Hammett) is here making changes and we all saw what he did with the Hurricanes and changing the culture there. I’m sure we have got the right people here to make it all happen.”
