In heavy conditions, the visitors went ahead directly from the kick-off, and took a narrow 3-7 lead in to half time. Bridgend replied with tries from Matthew Hillman and Griff Davies, one of which was converted by Aled Thomas.

But Bargoed showed their power up top, pushing a scrum over for a penalty try to add to two tries from Number 8 Geraint Edmunds and one from centre Phil Price to seal victory.

Elsewhere, a man of the match performance by fly-half debutant Jack Wilson inspired Swansea to a 49-0 win over Tondu in an open game at St Helens. Wilson controlled the game with some excellent kicking as well as frequent line breaks to disrupt Tondu’s defence as Swansea dominated the game.

Three tries from Joe Thomas, two from Matthew Davies and one each for Jake Cole and Matthew Llewellyn sealed the win for Swansea.

Cardiff MET moved level on points with Narberth after beating them 32-21 in an exciting game, despite a blistering try from Steve Martin the Otters in the first half. Tries from Julian Watkins, Chris Lewis, Charles Hewitt and John Dawe sealed the victory for MET.

Tata Steel beat Llanharan 10-9 in an evenly matched game at the Margam thanks to a try from Owain Thomas. Jack O’Reilly kicked four penalties to inspire Glynneath to a 17-11 victory at Blackwood in a toughly fought game.
