Playing into the wind Bedwas took an early lead via two Richard Powell penalties the second one following a fight among the forwards that saw Newport prop David Young sin-binned for a punch.

Bedwas increased the lead after 20 minutes via Mathew John to the left of the posts, Richard Powell’s conversion hit a post and bounced to safety.

Newport responded through a good try from scrum half Owen Davies who found his way through a gap in the Bedwas defence, Geraint O’Driscoll added the conversion.

Bedwas went down to 14 men after 34 minutes with prop Matthew Pettit yellow carded for an off the ball punch but Bedwas did not let it affect them and responded immediately as Rory Budina crossed for a try in the right hand corner. Powell’s conversion missed the target.

With the wind at their backs for the second half a lovely break by Crane set up Budina for his second try after 55 minutes with Powell adding the extras. Two Arron Pinches tries after 60 and 65 minutes earned Bedwas a bonus point, the former converted by Powell and the latter by Jack Maynard effectively sealed the game for Bedwas with fifteen minutes left.

Newport found a way through for a second try after 76 minutes from former Bedwas number 8 Sam Feehan, O’Driscoll again adding the conversion.

The game ended with Newport again down to fourteen men as replacement scrum half Andrew Quick saw yellow for a punch. There was still time for Bedwas to add a sixth try on the final whistle as Mathew John broke down the left wing to complete a very satisfactory afternoon for Bedwas. The only down side of the afternoon being a torn bicep sustained by Rory Budina which will see him miss the rest of the season.

Next Saturday (07 March) Bedwas host Bridgend Ravens at the Bridge Field, kick off 2-30pm.
