Ravens stun Ponty to secure SSE SWALEC Cup

A determined display was needed from Bridgend as they got their hands on the SSE SWALEC Cup in their first final for 25 years after they defeated firm favourites Pontypridd 19-15.

With the roof closed due to rain, Pontypridd had the better of the match early on and took the lead 12 minutes in through a penalty by Simon Humberstone.

Owen Howe then replied for Bridgend shortly after, with their own penalty in what was a very tight first 20 minutes.

A collapsing scrum resulted in another penalty being awarded to the Ravens and made the scores 6-3 after 26 minutes.

A high tackle to the Pontypridd kicker resulted in another penalty five minutes later, and he got up to take the kick, only to see it drift wide of the post.s

Pontypridd put the Bridgend defence under some intense pressure towards the end of the half, pinning them close to their own tryline as the struggled to break through.

They eventually did manage to, when a sweeping attack from the left wing led to Aled Summerhill’s jinking run to end the move with a try past a determined Bridgend defence. The conversion was made and Ponty went in to halftime with a 10-6 lead.

Another penalty just after the break made the score 10-9 before both sides had tries disallowed for knock-ons.

The boot of Owen Howe then gave Bridgend the lead on 62 minutes before a missed catch by Matthew Nuthall allowed Tom O’Flaherty to kick the ball ahead and chase through for a try, which was converted to take the scores to 19-10.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, the Pontypridd forward pack pushed over the tryline to make the last 10 minutes a nervy affair for Bridgend, who twice let the pressure get to them after kicking out on the full.

Losing ground from a scrum in the final minute, the Ravens had to hurry the final kick to end the game, and spark wild celebrations on the pitch.
