Wales lost their opening game of the series 42-11 to South Africa Schools in Cape Town last Friday but put that defeat firmly behind them, touching down for five tries with Teri Morgan Gee leading the way with a brace.

Shaun Evans, Billy McBrdye and Connor Edwards scored the other tries as Wales took control of the game after leading 18-5 at the break.

The first half proved a stop-start affair with a lengthy stoppage. Wales also had to overcome the loss of centre Kieran Williams who suffered a nasty-looking injury which meant a delay of play for nearly 15 minutes.

Having now played two games on tour, WRU National Performance Manager Gethin Watts said he was happy the squad can head back to Cape Town with a spring in their step.

“Although we probably left 10 to 12 points out there, the boys stepped up after the opening defeat. Not only was it important to win after that loss, but I was impressed in the manner of the victory as the boys scored some excellent tries with great execution.

“This tour for this age group has certainly met our expectations,” he said.

“It would be fair to say that when up against South African opposition, the boys have never played at that very high level before. They have certainly never played against teams of this physicality and pace.

“But everybody in the group has now played on tour but we will make a number of changes for the final game against South Africa Schools A. This tour was always about player development and exposing our players to these conditions and they have certainly responded well – on and off the pitch,” he said.
