After spending last Wednesday and Thursday based in camp in Cardiff, the Welsh squad remained unbeaten on Saturday.

Wales drew 12-12 against a very good Spain side who went on to finish runners-up in the tournament. Sixteen-year-old Kourtney Lewis’s try was a standout before Wales went on to defeat Italy 22-5 in an excellent team effort.

After a titanic struggle with Ireland, an outstanding try by Katie Thicker ensured Wales snatched a 10-7 triumph having defended for about 80 per cent of game.

“Day one was a solid start with the performances improving steadily every game even when the weather was getting worse with torrential rain against Ireland,” said Edwards. “The draw against Spain enabled us to have the best second placed ranking of 4th going into the second day of action.”

Hopes of glory were dashed on Sunday in the quarter-finals when a well drilled Germany won 27-12. A failure to control possession proved their downfall as the talented Germans punished Wales’ errors.

Wales scored some excellent tries against Ireland but lapses in concentration allowed Ireland to secure a 26-19 victory. Wales bounced back to finish in style and controlled the game superbly against Belgium to register a 24-5 victory where Emma Hennessy showed her class with some excellent tries and also setting one up.

“Overall, I’m pleased with how the players performed, with the whole tournament being an opportunity to see the players under pressure and also provide them with an outlet to perform on the international stage,” added Edwards.

“The players have learned a few harsh lessons, and the coaches have learnt a lot about the players.”

Scrum half/centre Katie Thicker impressed for Wales where she was excellent in attack and fearless in defence while Claire Morgan led from the front and proved an inspirational captain.

Players who will be graduating into the senior game this year are Sam Morris, Bethan Jones, Sophie Waugh, Lowri Truslove and Emma Hennessy.
