Caernarfon’s greater experience was enough to ensure victory in this encounter although they failed to be as decisive and forceful as usual.
They enjoyed the best possible opening when a scrum in the twenty two saw Jenny Davies pick up and pass to allow Teleri Wyn to score her first senior team try within the first couple of minutes.
Cardiff Met responded and contained the Cofis who lacked the usual commitment to the breakdown area with former Caernarfon Under 18 scrum half Sioned Williams relishing facing her old training teammates. When called upon however the Cofis guarded their try line with Elen Evans instrumental in securing good turnover ball to thwart one potentially fruitful incursion into Cofi territory.
Indeed it was Evans’s quick thinking that stretched the Cofis lead by taking a quick penalty and darting towards the try line to record another five pointer on the half hour mark.
Elen Evans was again at hand to support Alaw Davies on the stroke of half time to score her second try and thus stretch the lead to 15 points.
During the early stages of the second half Cardiff Met once again applied pressure but sound tackling from the likes of debutant captain Emma Edwards and a rejuvenated Sarah Patchett proved decisive.
Cardiff Met’s centre was prominent and effective but one promising incursion saw her being forced into touch just short by a Davies and Edwards combined tackle.
The game was made safe when Rachel Taylor and Lea Royle were able to release speedster Elen Evans for her third try of the match which she also converted to establish a 22 point gap.
A front row injury led to uncontested scrums for the remainder of the game but Cardiff Met were competitive to the last with one interception nearly bringing them reward but for excellent covering by the Cofi rearguard.
Greta Jâms applied herself well to the unaccustomed fullback role with wing Rhian Pritchard being as lively as ever before her departure near full time.
The final score stemmed from a Taylor break before a timely pass to Evans saw her ground between the sticks.
The Cofis will be aware that sterner tests will follow but will take some pride in the fact that their try line was not breached.
