Alan was a star of the Newport team of the 1960’s playing 213 games and scoring 42 tries. His most famous hour was making the try saving tackle at the end of the 1963 match against New Zealand that allowed Newport to hang on for a famous 3-0 win. Alan loved to tell the story of the game and that tackle in particular and many reading this will have heard the story more than once!
His performance in that match led to two caps for Wales but it was for Newport where he made his mark on the game of rugby union.
Algy will be remembered for his performances on the pitch but after his retirement from playing he remained a familiar and regular visitor to Rodney Parade for Newport matches and social occasions.
A keen active member of the Former Players Association and also a big supporter of Friends of Newport Rugby in recent years, Algy could always be relied upon to say a ‘few words.’ Those privileged to see him inducted into the Newport RFC Hall of Fame or who were present at the 50th anniversary dinner celebrating the All Blacks victory will remember the wonderful stories he told in a fashion that only he could.
