Wales Sevens host England and Scotland

Wales Sevens and the Millennium Stadium hosted a series of conditioned games against England and Scotland today as part of preparations for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

The series kicks off in Dubai next month and this is the second time the three unions trained together during a long pre-season which for most players began five months ago.

In the build up to the Olympics the teams face a condensed and increased schedule of ten tournaments, rather than the nine of previous years.  New hosts include Singapore, France and Canada and venue changes occur in Australia and South Africa, with their tournaments moving from the Gold Coast to Sydney and from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town.

The games allowed the squads and coaches to fine tune their intensive preparations in match environments and Wales Sevens Head Coach Gareth Williams believes it will be a huge benefit to the squads.

“It is great for the players and the coaches to have the opportunity to play conditioned matches ahead of what is going to be another exciting HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series,” he said.

“These matches take training to a different level and will really benefit us ahead of the tournament which kicks off in Dubai next month.

“Having the opportunity to play these matches at the Millennium Stadium, with the great surface on offer and the roof closed is a huge benefit.”

England Sevens Head Coach Simon Amor said: “These conditioned sessions with Wales and Scotland have provided the players with valuable game time against very good opposition.   Training with them at Bisham Abbey was successful but to do it here under the roof at the Millennium Stadium is brilliant preparation for everyone.

“Working together as Home Unions also brings a Great Britain element.  There are lots of good conversations taking place with Gareth Williams and Calum MacRae [Head Coach Scotland 7s] about how we get all our teams absolutely firing for this world series.  The more successful the Home Nations are, the better the place Team GB will be in come the summer.  It is an exciting time for sevens.”
