Jones ready to end long layoff

Wales prop Rhodri Jones is closing in on a return to action after nearly 11 months on the sidelines.

The Scarlets tighthead has not played since dislocating his shoulder in January. That injury ruled him out of the RBS 6 Nations and he then suffered a torn pectoral muscle in July which sidelined him for Wales’ World Cup campaign.

The 23-year-old, who signed a National Dual Contract last season, has battled his way back to fitness and will get some match action this weekend. Jones will either feature for the Llanelli RFC side or will be involved in the Scarlets 23 to face Zebre in the Guinness Pro 12 on Sunday.

“Rhodri is in full training and he will play this weekend,” confirmed Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac. “With Pete Edwards injured we have a decision to make and we have not named our squad for the Zebre game yet.

“He is in our calculations as an option, but we will make the decision later in the week as he has got to come through everything. The other option is to put him in with the semi-prop side, but either way he will be playing some rugby this weekend.”

Pivac also confirmed he will have tighthead Samson Lee available to face the Italian side after the Wales cap was forced off with a head wound in the European Champions Cup loss to Racing Metro.

“Samson went into a tackle situation and got his forehead opened up and it was a nasty cut,” said Pivac.

“He could not go back on but he will be fine this weekend, but Pete Edwards is out as he damaged a ligament in his elbow.”
