PREVIEW: Newport v Carmarthen Quins

PREVIEW: Newport v Carmarthen Quins

Newport resumes fixtures after a mid-season break and a SSE Swalec Cup game against Carmarthen is an ideal way to shake off the cobwebs.

After training in the pouring rain on Tuesday and in a freezing wind on Thursday the players will be relieved to finally run out on the Rodney Parade turf on Sunday. There is still huge competition for places and very good players are unable to claim a place in the matchday 23.

The pack remains the same as selected for the last two games as does the five forward replacements. Julian Mogg keeps the ten jersey with Arwel Robson as cover. Ryan James starts at nine and his experience and control could be vital in the anticipated tricky conditions.

Aled James and Haydn Palmer form the centre partnership with the back three having a settled look, Elliot Frewen, Wes Cunliffe and Llywarch ap Myrddin.

The Rodney Parade ground staff are confident that this game will be on despite some rain forecast for Saturday.  Our thanks to them and our friends from Carmarthen for agreeing to play on Sunday.

Newport: Llywarch ap Myrddin, Wes Cunliffe, Haydn Palmer, Aled James, Elliot Frewen, Julian Mogg, Ryan James, Brendan Lampitt, Rhys Jenkins, Rhodri Jones, Dan Partridge, Adam Jones (capt), Alex Jeffries, Evan Whitson, John Lavender.
Replacements:  Henry Palmer, Tom Piper, James Greenfield, Joe Cullimore, Jack Goodey, Owen Davies, Arwel Robson, Barney Nightingale.
