Newport go top to make Frewen’s day

Newport gave Elliot Frewen the perfect gift to mark his 100th appearance for the club as they picked up a convincing bonus-point win over Bridgend Ravens to knock Pontypridd off the top of the Principality Premiership.

In the only game that survived the latest torrential downpour that have so blighted this season, the Black & Ambers made the most of their opportunity to return to the top of the table and reveal their title credentials.

It took just two minutes for Newport to open their account when outside half Matt O’Brien made the break that opened up the Ravens defence and allowed full back Llywarch Ap Myrddin to cross. O’Brien added the conversion and then put in a neat grubber kick that gave centre Wes Cunliffe the second try.

Joe Scrivens then got the visitors on the board with a quick bit of thinking as he took a quick tap penalty and drove over for a try which he also converted. At 16-8 there seemed a chance for the Ravens to make a game of it, but then they lost their wing Mike Powell to the sin-bin for fighting.

No 8 Brendan Lampitt made the Ravens and Powell pay by grabbing a third home try and Newport led by 16 points at the break. Newport emerged for the second half wearing red shirts and the bonus point was secured when lock Dan Partridge converted a driving line-out into the fourth try of the afternoon.

There was a rush of yellow cards as the temperature of the game rose in the closing quarter and Bridgend showed off their fighting spirit by claiming a second try through skipper and No 8 Ashton Evans. That was as good as it got, though, for the visitors, who are one off the bottom of the table.

Newport, meanwhile, are a point clear of Pontypridd and have a game in hand on the next three clubs, who are all three points behind.
