Wales Sevens claim Bowl in Las Vegas

Wales head coach Gareth Williams heads to the Vancouver leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series this weekend with renewed optimism after seeing his young side claim the Bowl in Las Vegas yesterday.

Wales began the fifth leg of the series with two defeats at the Sam Boyd Stadium on day one against USA (19-12) and South Africa (36-7).

Tries by Kristian Phillips, Ben Roach and Ethan Davies ensured Wales squeezed past Canada 17-10 in the final pool game on Saturday before Luke Treharne’s side ended the second day of action with a 31-12 victory over Portugal in the Bowl quarter-final.

A tight semi-final against Scotland could have gone either way with the score level 14-14 at the hooter but a cheeky kick ahead by Adam Thomas was gathered by Phillips who cantered over to secure victory.

Wales then finished off the job against France in the Bowl final with a convincing 28-14 win with Davies, Tom Isaacs, Treharne and Luke Morgan scoring tries to ensure Wales remained unbeaten over the final two days of competition.

“To pick up the Bowl final was a pleasing conclusion to the weekend. And to put four consecutive wins together, was very satisfying for a developing squad,” said Williams.

“We were happy in our performances against the USA and South Africa, with some officiating, I felt, costing us an opportunity to take something from the USA match.

“The way we played in the opening four minutes against an excellent South African squad was very encouraging, however we failed to manage that match effectively past that period and  their intensity was impressive and something for our inexperienced squad to aspire to.

“The resolve the boys showed from then on was superb, and to put four consecutive wins together was a huge step following the inconsistencies of our last two legs. I am proud of the work the group have put in, and excited as there are still improvements to come.”
