Wales U20 hold open training session at Monmouth RFC

Mid way through their preparations for the forthcoming World Rugby U20 Championship (Manchester, June 7 – 25), Wales U20 head coach Jason Strange is taking his squad to Monmouth for a three day training camp next week.

The squad will be based at Monmouth RFC and the squad players will be hosted by the families of the club’s junior section.

The side will hold an open training session on Monday (4pm, 17 May, Monmouth RFC), while on Tuesday, the Wales U20 players will run a coaching session for the club’s junior section, followed by a barbecue for the players and families.

Strange said, “The quality of our training has been good since we got together and has gone up a level again this week with the regional players joining us following the end of their Guinness Pro 12 campaigns.

“There has been a focus on skills and conditioning so far and from next week there will be a lot of unit work and team sessions before concentrating on our preparation for Ireland on June 7.

“Spending three days in Monmouth will help our preparation in a number of ways. It will allow us to get a lot of intense work done and it will also further enhance our team culture and togetherness as a squad. Staying with host families and running a coaching session for the junior players will help the players’ personal development, leadership qualities and test them in unfamiliar environments.

“The players have all come through junior clubs themselves so it’s important we retain close links with grassroots clubs.

“The players are staying with families so hopefully holding an open training session will give those families and the rest of the local community a chance to see our team preparation for themselves and the support will help the players as they prepare for their biggest challenge yet in Manchester in a few weeks’ time.”
