The tournament moves five miles from its traditional home where British Army will look to go one better than last season when finishing runners-up to Samurai in the Senior event.
The Army possess an illustrious record at the tournament, having won the tournament on seven occasions but Ponty Butchers – Plate Winners last season – and Crawshays who were Plate runners-up, will ensure the soldiers don’t have everything their own way.
Newcastle Falcons-based Red Wailers could also prove a handful, having recently been victorious in the Heart of Wales 7s held in Llanidloes while Carmarthen Warriors usually find themselves sniffing silverware wherever they appear on the sevens circuit.
Skewen return to defend the Shield but will face stiff competition to make it two on the bounce.
Terbanos, who won in 2012 and were runners-up the following year, along with Vardre – who are competing for a record 34th time, will also fancy their chances.
The Cwmtawe 7s was first played in Pontardawe in the early 1980s, after the local community decided to champion the short version of the game in order to raise money for charity.
In its heyday the Cwmtawe 7s was a fixture in the rugby calendar, drawing thousands of supporters and dozens of sides each year for what was seen as a curtain raiser to the rugby season. The new look event, aims to raise money to provide equipment for local hospital wards.
With a total of £5,000 up for grabs in prize-money and a new structure being implemented, there is certain to be plenty of exciting action on display with the day’s action starting at 10am.
