Ford, born in Cardiff and a product of the Cardiff Schools pathway made his Blue & Black debut in 2008 against Maesteg and has made 47 appearances. In that time he has scored 13 tries. His father – Steve – still holds the record of being the all-time top try scorer with a career total of 198 tries.
Speaking of the appointment Team Manager Iestyn Williams said, “Since his return to the club last January, Luke has shown all the required qualities needed to lead us into the new season.
“His leadership skills and knowledge of the game are just a few of his strong points. He has also gained the respect of fellow squad members and leads by example with our team values in mind. He’s a born and bred Cardiff boy and his appointment is certainly a positive step forward for us as a club.”
Head Coach Daune Goodfiled, added, “I am very pleased to announce Luke Ford as Club Captain for the coming season. Luke is a natural leader on and off the field, he is a player of quality and is respected within the club and throughout the Premiership.”
Ford himself said of the appointment, “It is a great honour for me and a great responsibility. I captained Wales at U18 level but have not captained anywhere since, so I have had a small taste of being a captain. My family are especially proud, my dad obviously has huge links with the club and a Cardiff boy captaining the capital club makes it very special. It is something that I am immensely looking forward to.”
Ford has already led the side out this season, captaining the Blue & Blacks at Skewen last Friday. His next task will be running on to the Arms Park on Saturday against Taunton (kick off 12:00).
