Price blow for Scarlets

Scarlets lock Tom Price will be sidelined for up to 10 weeks after dislocating his elbow in pre-season action.

The former Leicester lock was injured during the west Wales region’s defeat to Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park, and has since undergone surgery.

“Tom has had a bit of surgery and will be a couple of months away, probably eight to 10 weeks, which is disappointing because we put some size on him during the off-season and he was looking good and playing in that first half against Exeter,” said Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac.

The Scarlets were already without Wales international props Rob Evans and Samson Lee, who have wrist and shoulder problems respectively, for the start of their Guinness Pro12 campaign.

After pre-season fixtures against Exeter and Bath, Pivac plans to hold an intra-squad game later this week as they step up final preparations for their opening league game against Munster on September 3.

“We are planning to have a bit of an internal match just to give some of the guys a bit more game time,” said Pivac.

“We have had two tough games against two tough English opponents. The first-half against Bath was a bit of a dress rehearsal for that Munster game, obviously there are a few guys to add in, but behind the scenes the work in training is the important stuff.

“We are making progress on the intensity we train at so we can take that onto the field and hopefully lift our standards to another level this year. After being in the top two and top four for so long last season, we want to take that next step.”
