There were six matches played on the opening Wednesday of the season and the only away win was recorded by Whitchurch HS. They went to Bridgend College and came up with a 44-6 win that included seven tries.

It was a bit different to last season when they let a 20-7 lead slip as they suffered a 32-28 defeat. But a hat-trick of tries from wing Will Young sent them on their way to a convincing win this time.

Head coach Steve Williams paraded nine new players in his starting line-up, with Llandaff Cathedral School convert Young among them. There were also two tries from home-spun product Owen Jones at No 8 and the former Corpus Christi centre Nat Ahmed also got on the scoresheet.

“It wasn’t perfect, but it was a better way to start than last season when we surrendered a useful lead. We have had a good in-take and it was nice to blood so many newcomers,” said Williams.

“They all understand the rich rugby heritage of the school and they have worked very hard in pre-season. We had some pleasing performances in friendly games against Filton College, King’s Macclesfield and at the King’s Rugby tournament.

“Now we have to get ready for our opening game at home against a strong Cowbridge Comprehensive side next week.”

Last season’s beaten finalists, Coleg Sir Gar, beat Newport HS 35-8, while the Cardiff derby between Cardiff & Vale College and Ysgol Glantaf ended in a narrow 14-8 win for CAVC at the BT Sport Arms Park.

Pembrokeshire College earned a morale boosting win over Coleg Gwent, triumphing 26-10 on home soil.
