The participating teams join more than 1000 others signed up to the Half A Game scheme, which ensures children are given the opportunity to play a minimum of half of every game.
Llandaff were among the first to adopt the successful Half A Game concept of fun and inclusivity to help keep youngsters in rugby.
The festival hosts paid tribute to all the teams involved, which included Barry, Clwb Rygbi Cymry Caerdydd, Cowbridge, Fairwater, Glamorgan Wanderers, Llandaff North, Llanishen, Llanrumney, Old Penarthians, Penarth, Pentyrch, Rhiwbina, Rumney, St Albans and St Peters.
Ron Jenkins, Junior and Youth Club Secretary at Llandaff, said: “Equal playing opportunities for young players is something we feel incredibly passionate about as Llandaff and it is great to see such enthusiasm for the Half A Game initiative sweeping the region this season. The weekend’s festival was a fantastic success which is testament to the fair play demonstrated by all the teams involved; coaches, parents, children and supporters alike!”
WRU Rugby Coordinator Jake Thomas added: “The support within the Cardiff and Vale District for Half A Game festivals has been tremendously positive, not least by Llandaff who were one of the first clubs to drive Half A Game within the region. Llandaff are a shining example of the benefits of the scheme with healthy registration numbers across all age groups and greater player retention through the transitional stage from U16s to Youth rugby. It’s all down to their dedication and a positive rugby environment and it is very fitting Llandaff hosted a successful Cardiff and The Vale Junior District Association festival, the first of many Half A Game festivals in the Cardiff Blues region.”
Half A Game is part of the WRU Rugby Pathway, providing clubs, coaches, children and parents with support in the form of training as well as practical and promotional resources.
The Half a Game campaign is part of the WRU’s overarching remit to engage more people, more often with more enjoyment and more success.
