The win came despite an early blow when visiting skipper Lloyd Evans had to be helped off the field, but it was the prolific Hywel Chatham who got the scoreboard moving with a penalty moments after Nick Gale had hit the upright for the Otters.
Gale then levelled the scores before a Matthew Howells break into midfield sent Chatham in the clear. The outside half drew the defence and then gave wing James Davies to show off his finishing skills.
Chatham converted the try from in front of the posts, but the visitors were soon reduced to 14 men when centre Lewis Egal was sent to the sin bin after a fracas. Gale doubled the punishment by reducing the gap to four points with his second successful penalty.
Beddau were bristling after losing Egal and after James Cashin made the catch at a line-out in the home 22, Kristian Parker and Rob Jones joined forces to help young open side Leon Rogers to cross for a second try that made it 15-6 at the break.
Chatham gave his side the perfect start to the second half with another penalty, but the Otters bit back with a well-worked try from wing Jack Parkinson. That made it a one-score game and an even tougher test of Beddau’s battling resolve.
Narberth’s hopes were dashed, though, when they lost hooker Dan Smith and tight-head Ryan Rees to injuries, forcing the game to go to uncontested scrums. Then the home side saw a forward sent to the bin for a ruck offence.
Beddau smelt blood and they finished off the Otters with another Chatham penalty and a third try from wing Morgan Williams. The win moved Beddau up to fourth place ahead of this weekend’s trip to face eighth placed Skewen.
After overcoming the stern challenge of Tata Steel last weekend, Pontypool maintained their Championship dominance with a straightforward 33-3 win over new-boys Skewen to move 10 points clear at the top. Their seventh straight win maintained their unbeaten run and, coupled with Tata Steel’s defeat, put them in control of the table.
Pooler ran in five tries courtesy of Aaron Quick, Brandon Kent, Rob Nash and Marc Thorley with Kristian Smith scoring the bonus-point try 15 minutes after the interval. Kieran Meek converted three of the tries and Tom Hancock added a fourth, while Anthony Buseli kicked the only points for the visitors with a solitary penalty.
Tata Steel missed out on the chance to stay hot on the heels of the league leaders as they were beaten 22-10 at Bedlinog. Sam Farrer Evans and Ben Grzesica put Tata to the sword as they crumbled to back-to-back defeats, despite Matthew Llewellyn’s try.
Glamorgan Wanderers moved off the bottom of the table with their first win of the season as they beat Newbridge, 20-10. Darren Ryan and Dan Crimmins both crossed for tries and outside half Luke Fish added 10 points with the boot as the Cardiff side swapped places with Dunvant.
Newcastle Emlyn plunged Dunvant into deep trouble with their 22-16 home victory. Wing Dan Davies scored a try and a penalty and Tom Currie also touched down for Emlyn. Dunvant threatened a comeback through Adam Williams’ early second-half score, but the Red and Blacks were able to see the game off with a series of Sean Leonard penalties.
Cardiff Met fell to a fourth successive defeat as they were beaten 25-10 at home by Glynneath. The students’ involvement in the BUCS Super League has seen them shift their focus to the midweek matches at this stage of the season and, as a result, they haven’t won since they beat Glamorgan Wanderers on 15 September.
Wings Ryan Jones and Aled Evans scored tries, James Roberts grabbed a third and Cory Jenkins chipped in with 10 points from the boot for Glynneath, who moved up to sixth place in the table
