National Cup: RGC 1404 v Llandovery

RGC 1404 scrum half Alex Schwarz is hoping the home comforts of Parc Eirias will help his side reach the WRU National Cup semi-finals for the first time when they host current holders Llandovery at the weekend.

The game against the Drovers will end a run of three successive away matches, two of which they lost. They were beaten in the Principality Premiership Tier 1 games at Llandovery and then Aberavon, but beat Bridgend to go into the last 16 of the cup.

The 31-20 triumph at the Brewery Field over the Ravens followed on a convincing opening round cup triumph at home against Dunvant. They ran in 13 tries in an 81-7 win on 28 January to unceremoniously dump the Championship side out of the tournament.

“It’s always disappointing not to win, especially when we were as competitive as we were against Aberavon last week.  That game came on the back of two other away games, so it will be good to be back at Eirias on Saturday,” said Schwarz.

“We have an opportunity to right a few errors from the last time we played Llandovery. We know we have to get the basics right against them to build a platform to perform.

“It’s a quarter-final, and we won’t get ahead of ourselves, but the fact we will have the home advantage and, hopefully, a big vocal crowd behind us is something we are all looking forward to. Last season we ran Carmarthen Quins close at this stage of the cup, so the incentive to go one stage better is there for us.

“We know the challenge ahead of us against Llandovery will be a tough one.  We are one-all in the results this season, and both sides look to play some attacking rugby, which will suit the Eirias pitch.”

RGC were 28-25 winners at home over their visitors in the third round of the opening phase of the Premiership, but lost 20-10 at Church Bank in their Tier 1 return. Whoever wins the third meeting will be one step nearer the WRU National Cup final.
