League leaders Bonymaen saw their advantage at the top cut to a single point with a 27-24 defeat to fifth place Trebanos. It means Trebanos are still very much in the title hunt as they have seven games to play to Bonymaen’s six and trail the leaders by four points.
Despite leading 17-10 at the break, Bonymaen were undone by a Steff Lewis try double for Trebanos, who also had tries from and Sam Davies and full-back Luke Griffiths also going over. With three home games left, the key to Trebanos’ title hopes could be their away trip to third placed Aberavon Quins on 2 May.
The Quins were the biggest winners on a nail-biting weekend as they trumped Bridgend Athletic 16-13. Ryan Pugh held his nerve to slot the matchwinning penalty 10 minutes from end.
The Quins are now one point behind the leaders in third place and have a massive match at Maesteg Quins this weekend. Maesteg are two points behind them in fourth following their 27-20 home win over Seven Sisters.
In Division 1 East, Nelson’s title challenge took another blow as they lost on the road for the second time this month against one of the top four teams. League leaders Rhydyfelin ran out 34-12 winners two weeks ago and this time it was fourth placed Ynysybwl who proved too strong for the Unicorns, beating them 27-25.
The home side sped into a 17-3 interval lead thanks to tries from Jack Griffiths and Macauley Griffiths, both of which were converted by Dion McIntosh, who also added a penalty. Nelson hit back to close the gap to four points at the start of the second half.
McIntosh, who ended the game with 12 points, and Sean Ireland crossed for second half tries before a last gasp try from wing Daniel Davies grabbed a losing bonus-point for Nelson. The Unicorns are now six points behind Rhydyfelin, who have a game in hand, and are only 12 points clear of third placed Penallta, who have three game in hand on them.
Rhiwbina proved a glimmer of hope to second placed Ystrad Rhondda in their battle to overtake Division 1 East Central leaders Treorchy as they inflicted only a second defeat of the season on the Zebras with a 20-15 home triumph. It means Treorchy now lead by only seven points from Ystrad, who have a game in hand and picked up four points on the road with a hard-fought 19-17 win at Heol y Cyw.
Aaron Forey scored twice for third placed Rhiwbina in one of their best performances of the season. Rory Harries and Jamie Deaberu also scored home tries to earn them a bonus-point.
In North Wales, Pwllheli put their shock WRU National Plate quarter-final loss to Abercarn behind them as they ran riot against bottom of the table Abergele, coming out victors’ by 117-0. That result puts them three points behind rivals Nant Conwy at the summit with a game in hand.
Third placed Caernarfon also piled on the points with a 85-12 home win over Colwyn Bay, while fourth placed Bala picked up a bonus-point in their 25-21 win at Llandudno.
Kidwelly took a significant step towards claiming the Division 1 West title as they comfortably beat Felinfoel 50-7 and saw their nearest challengers Llanelli Wanderers fall 34-19 at Penclawdd. That created a five point swing and took Kidwelly 12 points clear at the top with four games left to play.
Basement boys Loughor gave themselves a fighting chance of beating the drop with a thrilling 20-20 draw with Waunarlwydd. They are now only four points off safety, although they host top of the table Kidwelly this weekend.
