It is the first time the women’s match will be staged at the iconic rugby venue. The stadium has previously played host to four men’s matches; with Swansea winning three of them in 2011, 2013 and 2014 and a victory for Cardiff in 2012.
The event returns to the Welsh capital after two years at Liberty Stadium. Swansea University’s men will be aiming for a repeat of last year’s performance and the Ladies looking to avenge last year’s defeat to take home the Welsh Varsity cup.
Situated right in the heart of the city-centre, Principality Stadium provides a fitting stage for the showpiece event between the two university teams which has previously featured Wales and British and Irish Lions stars Alun Wyn Jones and Jamie Roberts.
Captains from Cardiff and Swansea described the scale of the occasion for the ladies teams making their stadium debuts.
“We’re really excited,” said Abbi Flemming, looking for a win in front of the Principality Stadium crowd: “We’re using this as a big drive to hold the title again.”
Megan Griffiths of Swansea University added: “This is an incredible opportunity for us, not just as a team but for women’s sport in general.”
The double-header showdown between Cardiff and Swansea universities is guaranteed to be the hottest ticket in town for students and rugby supporters.
This 2017 ticket includes access to two rugby matches, as well as over 30 sports as Cardiff and Swansea compete for the Welsh Varsity Shield at Cardiff venues including the Welsh Institute of Sport, the SSE Swalec and Cardiff Arms Park.
