Ferndale crowned champions of Division 3 East Central C

Ferndale are champions of Three East Central C. That was exactly the target for head coach Richard Wells when he took up the reigns from long-time friend and former Ystrad Rhondda team mate Dan Phillips last summer.

The Greenwood Park outfit bagged the title with three games to spare and will be looking to finish with a perfect 100 per cent winning record.

“It’s been great,” said Wells. “I’d kept an eye on the team over the years with it being my hometown and I just wanted to take over the challenge from Daniel [Phillips] who had got them to where they were in terms of a level of fitness.

“I wanted to get them to play rugby a bit more. Even though they’re in the lowest division I just wanted them to play above their level really.

“When I applied for the job and had a meeting with the committee I set my stall out.

“The team had just narrowly missed out on promotion the previous season and my main objectives were to bring in personnel, as I spotted weaknesses in the team, and to get them promoted.”

Ferndale’s unbeaten league record came under serious threat back on March 11 when they trailed 27-0 at title rivals Hirwaun as the game approached half time – before battling back to win 31-30.

“That was our get out of jail free card,” continued Wells. “The boys showed character and I knew I had some game-changers on the bench if we were found wanting and, fortunately, that paid off.”
