McBryde excited by squad balance

Interim Wales head coach Robin McBryde says he is hugely excited by his 32-man squad which will face Tonga and Samoa in June.

McBryde’s touring party will be captained by 91-cap centre Jamie Roberts and contains 13 uncapped players including young guns Rhun Williams, Ollie Griffiths and Adam Beard.

Wales will face Tonga at Eden Park in Auckland on June 16 before travelling to Apia to meet Samoa.

“As a coaching group we are very excited by the squad. It’s the balance of youth and experience which excites us in particular,” McBryde said.

“There is an opportunity for the players to grow and develop whatever stage of their career they are at. I want to see the older guys take up a leadership role and let the new faces settle in.

“For the young players who have been selected there is an opportunity to make sure they step up. Selection was a balancing act, but this is the only window to select these guys.

“It only happens every four years when World Cup seedings are out of the way and your best players are away with the British & Irish Lions.

“It’s the third opportunity I’ve had to do this after 2009 and 2013 and I’m very grateful.”

Games with Tonga and Samoa will test Wales to the full with 12 of their key men on duty with the British & Irish Lions on their tour of New Zealand.

McBryde’s squad will still have plenty of international knowledge in their squad with the likes of skipper Roberts, fellow centre Scott Williams and prop Samson Lee.

Add in the likes of Seb Davies, Ryan Elias and Owen Williams of Leicester and it’s an exciting mix.

McBryde believes Roberts is the right man to skipper his travelling party.

He said: “We are going out there to give ourselves the best chance to win the two matches.

“It would be short-sighted to not recognise the fact the Lions are playing so close to us. If they come knocking on our door we will support them without weakening ourselves too much.

“There were a number of options as a captain, but Jamie stood out for me because of the way he conducted himself in the Six Nations.

“He’s had to deal with not playing in the last year and his experience means he can share that knowledge with the younger players. He’s a selfless man who always puts the team first.”
