Tenby United’s class of 2017 are looking to replicate the club’s 1989 double success after securing the Division Two West title.

After playing catch-up for a number of weeks, Tenby’s 53-5 victory over Pontyberem ensured they finished the season as champions. Jack Gueirro was at the double with Andrew Cook, Mark Heywood, Jamie Morgan, Luke Hansford and Ashley Sutton, who also kicked 18 points, crashing over to secure one half of the double and climb back up to One West at the first time of asking.

“It’s the first time we’ve been promoted as champions so it’s a great feeling,” said head coach Chris James.

“We had an indifferent season last year and got relegated. But the team wasn’t getting beaten convincingly every week, we were always there or thereabouts.

“We identified where we needed to strengthen, which was a new backs coach. So we brought in Andrew Morgan, who has been a revelation.

“He’s helped us a lot and from the outset we knew we were on to something special. At the beginning of the season our target was a top-six finish and a good run in the cup but by December that changed to a top-two finish, for promotion, and to win the Pembrokeshire Cup.”

And Tenby have the chance to complete the double when they face Aberystwyth in the Pembrokeshire Cup final.
“To be promoted as champions is the best thing that’s happened to the club in a long time,” James added.

“But we’ve got our eyes on the cup final and the double in our club hasn’t been done since the 1988-89 season. But we’re confident of making history.”
