Cardiff-born Tomlinson has played 62 times in Blue & Black since his debut at Richmond in 2014 and has represented the Cardiff Blue Premiership XV on a regular basis. Having been brought up in Llanishen he went on to play for his home club before moving to UWIC.

The 24-year-old said, “I had no hesitation in accepting Steve (Law’s) offer. To captain the capitol city club is a huge honour and something that I had experience of when Luke Ford was unavailable last season, but to be appointed club captain is very special to me.

“The squad is coming together with a mix of some of the players from last season and a mix of experience and new talent being brought in. I am really looking forward to the new season and believe the Cardiff RFC can do something special this season.”

Law said of Tomlinson, “He is a great choice as captain. He leads by example and brings players on. Joe will run through a brick wall for Cardiff and will expect his team mates to follow. I am looking forward to working with him as my captain as he has so much to offer.”

The Blue & Blacks can also confirm the signing of James Sheekey on a fulltime basis. The Cardiff-born back row has played 33 times for Cardiff while with the Blues academy.

On the coaching front Khalid Jama will be replaced as Assistant Coach by James Dixon. The former Aberavon outside half will join up with the Blue & Blacks to progress his coaching career and add his wealth of Premiership experience.
