Quins secure Reynolds capture

Carmarthen Quins have enticed former Scarlets and Wales Under 20 centre Nic Reynolds back to Wales to play in the Principality Premiership next season.

The 28-year-old Llanelli-born player left Wales in 2014 after making 136 appearances for Llanelli and 54 for the Scarlets. He won six caps for Wales Under 20 in 2009, when he was competing with Ashley Beck and Scott Williams for a midfield slot.

Reynolds joined London Welsh in 2014 after leaving the Scarlets and played 18 times in the English Premiership in his first season at the club. He then played in the Championship following relegation the next season before heading to Newcastle Falcons at the start of the year.

“Nic has already made a major impact during training and is a great addition to our squad for next season. He will be joining Aled Thomas in our back line, after he took up a full-time player-coach role after leaving the Scarlets, and we are excited to see how they can help to develop our game,” said head coach Richard Kelly.

“We have got a good environment for the players and we showed last season that we can compete against the best teams in the Premiership. We beat the champions, Merthyr, and Pontypridd and made Tier 1.

“We had more players involved in the British & Irish Cup and Anglo-Welsh games than the other teams in our region and we helped to develop a lot of players for the Scarlets. Now we are looking forward to building on last season.”

Joining Thomas and Kelly on the coaching staff this season will be veteran outside half Craig Evans, who has decided to hang up his boots after making more than 120 appearances for the club. Former Wales World Cup Sevens winger Lee Williams is also stepping down to continue his career at Llandovery.

The Quins reached Tier 1 in the Principality Premiership last season and reached the final of the Foster’s Challenge Cup before missing out on silverware to Bedwas. As well as recruiting Reynolds and Thomas, they have also picked up some other quality players this summer.

Back row man James Bija will be hoping to resume his Premiership career after 18 months out with a knee injury, while Wales U18 loose head prop Rhys Davies and centre Scott Lloyd will be attached to the Quins from the Scarlets Academy.

Centre Jack Price, scrum half Aaron Hemmings, outside half Jack Wilson, scrum half Aled James and prop Kemsley Mathias have all signed up for the new season, while Rhys Williams, Iolo Evans, Ben Thompson, Gareth George, Connor Lloyd, Kieron Jones and Andrew Clatworthy join Lee Williams in leaving.

The Quins will warm-up for the new season with two friendly fixtures against WRU National Championship side Tata Steel (Thursday, 10 August at 19:00) and fellow Premiership club Cardiff (Saturday, 19 August at 14:30). Both games are away from home.
