Wales have named a strong squad for the final leg of Rugby Europe’s Sevens Grand Prix Series in Sandy Park this weekend.

“It’s good to be concluding our season with the exciting challenge of the final Rugby Europe tournament in Exeter,” says head coach Gareth Williams, whose team currently lies sixth after three rounds.

Wales will field their most experienced squad of this season’s Grand Prix Series – captained by newly-qualified doctor Luke Treharne – including World Series regulars Adam Thomas, Owen Jenkins, Ethan Davies and Ben Roach. Wales’ top try-scorer, Luke Morgan, is also a notable inclusion.

“It is the most balanced squad we have put together for Rugby Europe, and it will be good to keep monitoring players that have done well so far in their early sevens careers,” Williams says. “Boys like Chay Smith, Cai Devine, Lloyd Lewis, Afon Bagshaw and Joe Jenkins have been good during the course of the Series, and have an opportunity to learn from some extra experience in this weekend’s squad.”

Williams, part of Robin McBryde’s coaching staff for Wales’ recent successful summer tour, sees the Grand Prix Series as a highly useful competition for himself and assistant coach Richie Pugh: “Rugby Europe is a fantastic breeding ground and it’s proving to be invaluable in our ambition to increase competition moving in to the 2017/18 season.”

Pool B: Wales v Georgia (12:36); Wales v Poland (15:21); Russia v Wales (17:44). Live on Sky Sports.
