Aled Summerhill helped himself to three of the Blues’ six tries as they turned a 24-11 interval lead into an 11 point victory in the end. New defence consultant Shaun Edwards was at the Athletic Ground in Richmond to watch the game, while new signing Jack Roberts started at centre following his summer switch from Leicester Tigers.
It was an early surge from Roberts that helped to paved the way for the first of Summerhill’s tries and then Harri Millard crossed courtesy of a neat off-load from the hat-trick hero. Summerhill grabbed his second and then hooker Kirby Myhill added a third before the break.
Former Oxford University outside half Basil Strang used his big boot to keep Scottish in the contest as he kicked two penalties and scored a try to bag all his side’s first half points. The Exiles scored two more in the second half, and cut the gap to six points at one stage, but Summerhill’s hat-trick score and a sixth touchdown from Macauley Cook completed a reasonable first pre-season outing for the Blues.
Dan Fish returned to the starting XV at full back after fighting his way back from a long term injury, as did prop Brad Thyer and Welsh international back row man Josh Turnbull. The region’s latest Welsh internationals, Seb Davies and Dillon Lewis, both got game time, while former Ospreys, Scarlets and London Welsh wing Kristian Phillips played in the final quarter.
The Blues host Exeter Chiefs, who beat the Dragons 50-24 last weekend, on Friday night (kick-off 7.15pm). Tickets for the game are available HERE
