Evan Lloyd recovered his poise to kick the Dragons to a one point win over Cardiff Blues North in the WRU Under 18 Regional Age Grade tournament.

Having failed to convert his side’s first three tries, Lloyd added the extras to Wales Under 16 international centre Aneurin Owen’s second try and then stepped up to kick the match winning penalty in the closing minutes at The Wern, Merthyr.

Both sides scored four tries in a game that ebbed and flowed throughout. The lead changed hands twice in the final five minutes before the Dragons were able to take the victory, 25-24.

Rhys Davies gave Blues North the perfect start with a try in the second minute that he also converted. But after that it was one-way traffic for the next half an hour as the Dragons ran in four tries without response. Former Wales Under 16 wing Rio Dyer sped away for two tries and then Owen followed suit, with Lloyd converting the last one to make it 22-7.

Not to be outdone, Blues North hit back in the second half with a hat-trick of tries of their own. Skipper Callun James led the fightback with the first of the trio and then flying wing George Thomas cut the gap to one score.

Wales Under 18 prop Ben Warren, recently returned from South Africa, then got in on the act after coming off the bench and Cavan Slade’s conversion gave the home side a 73rd minute lead. That looked as though it might have been enough before the Dragons picked up a late, late penalty which allowed Lloyd to show his steely nerve and kick the winning goal.

In the Under 16 tournament, the Blues picked up two big wins as Blues South beat Dragons North 53-5 at the Arms Park and Blues North went to The Gnoll and scored six tries to beat Ospreys West 38-5. Scarlets West also beat Dragons South at Ystrad Mynach.
