Having lost their title to arch-vials Amman United last season, they opened up their 2017/18 campaign with a 61-27 win over Birchgrove.

There were 178 teams starting on the road to the Principality Premiership, with a number of 2nd XVs admitted for the first time. The weather took its toll on three ties (Ferryside v Cardigan, Pontrhydyfen v Neath Athletic, Crymych II v Newcastle Emlyn II) while a further 29 games turned into walk-overs.

The champions in 2016, Burry Port ran in nine tries to easy qualify for the next round. Adam Davies grabbed a hat-trick and there were doubles for Richard Parker and Andy Francis. Ceiron Thomas chipped in with seven conversions and Powell add an eighth.

Biggest winners in the first round were Nant Conwy II, who notched a century of points to despatch Mold II.

Flint scored 85 in their home win over Rhos, while Malpas won 84-14 at Forgeside and Fairwater were far too good for Old Penarthians as they won 75-5. Usk were 79-5 winners against Girling and New Tredegar ran out 71-5 at Pontllanfraith.
