Captain Alun Wyn Jones and his side face Australia on November 11, followed by Tests with Georgia, South Africa and New Zealand on consecutive Saturdays.
“I am very excited. We spoke last week about the countdown for the next two years,” Gatland said.
“We are excited about the group of players who are coming in with the five new caps from the summer. I’m as excited as ever, I need to reiterate that.
“There was speculation six months ago that I would do the Lions and am not come back, I’m not sure where that came from.”
Gatland named five uncapped players in his 36-man squad which he announced last week.
The New Zealand-born boss, who led the British & Irish Lions to an historic 1-1 series draw with the All Blacks in the summer, believes Wales have are building nicely ahead of the next World Cup.
“I need to stress that we can win the World Cup. I’m really excited about the next two years. I’m committed to Wales and I need to reiterate that,” Gatland said, looking ahead to 2019.
“We know we have to stay healthy and not pick up too many injuries, but what’s exciting about this group of players is their age-profile and their experience. We go into the World Cup campaign with a good balance.
“Apart from New Zealand, World Cups are traditionally won by teams with an age-profile of late 20’s to early 30’s and that’s exactly what we will be.”
Gatland is preparing Wales for their first clash with the Wallabies and has again spoken of the number of options he has available to him in midfield.
Dan Biggar, Rhys Priestland, Rhys Patchell, Owen Williams are all men who can offer a playmaking role at either fly-half or centre.
“I know Owen Williams has played a bit at 12 and a bit at 10, sometimes it is a huge benefit if players have played both positions,” Gatland said.
“We have had the discussion about whether Patchell could fill the centre role, he is playing quite flat and doing a good job for the Scarlets from an attacking perspective.
“We will look at combinations and put the players under pressure in terms of their decision making.
“Training is one thing, but there is nothing like a game, particularly first-up against Australia.
“We could look at another combination for the second game against Georgia depending on how the first game goes and who else we want to look at.”
