Super Series set for fast paced action

Super Series set for fast paced action

All roads lead to Cardiff Arms Park tomorrow (Sunday) where fast paced action is guaranteed in the second instalment of the Super Series which involves the cream of Welsh qualified talent at Under 18 level.

The festival is made up of Cardiff Blues North and Cardiff Blues South, Dragons, Ospreys, Scarlets, RGC and the Exiles, which will be comprised of players based outside of Wales.

The Scarlets put on barnstorming performances in the inaugural event last October and were the only unbeaten side on the day, securing victories over Cardiff Blues, Welsh Exiles and the Dragons.

This year’s version sees the games duration reduced to 30 minutes each with slight game adaptations enforced to place an emphasis on fast, running rugby in order to hone skills under pressure and develop game intensity.

Last year saw a dramatic increase of ball in play time, line-breaks, off-loads and turnovers as the rule adaptions encouraged teams to spread the ball and avoid contact.

This weekend further amendments have been created. One intriguing inclusion is that all coaches will be situated in the stand during the game, meaning players will not be able to rely on touchline guidance as they navigate their way through the game.

All players will start at least one game while the maximum game time allowed per player over the day is 80 minutes.

Rolling subs will be at any time with a maximum of 12 movements per game allowed while there will also be no penalty kicks or conversions taken.

This weekend’s action follows on quickly from a successful two day combine/skills programme held at Leckwith’s Cardiff and Vale College campus, earlier this week.

WRU Age grade skills coach Geraint Lewis spearheaded the two days with invited coaches from the regions and age grade coaches also present.
