Wales ready to fire

Robin McBryde has revealed how a team talk from former Swansea hooker Garin Jenkins has inspired Wales to make history against Australia on Saturday.

Jenkins won 58 caps for Wales between 1991 and 2002 and was in the Swansea side which defeated the Wallabies in 1992.

“There are a number of good ex-internationals out there whose words are worth listening to and Garin counts as one of those,” said McBryde.

“I just thought some words of wisdom from Garin would stand us in good stead, and he was excellent last night.

“It coincided with the 25th anniversary of Swansea beating Australia. We replayed the try so he could relive his moment of glory.

“It was great to have him there. He is a good man, and hopefully we will benefit from some of the knowledge he imparted. Anyone who has been in Garin’s company knows what an inspirational character he is.”

Forwards coach McBryde is expecting a stern physical challenge from the Wallabies in Cardiff and insists his pack must at least match their opponents in the physical confrontations.

“It starts and finishes with the front five,” said the former Scarlets hooker.

“We need to be able to give a platform in order to hopefully provide the team with possession we can benefit from and take advantage of.

“It’s easy to maybe disregard that aspect, with everyone talking about a new style of play, so I just wanted to bring that focus back down.

“From a front-five point of view, sometimes it is just doing what it says on the tin. No-one did it better than Garin.”

A key clash on Saturday will be between the three times capped openside flanker Josh Navidi and experienced Wallaby captain Michael Hooper.

But despite the gulf in experience, McBryde insists the Cardiff Bluesback-rower is up to the task.

“I’m very confident,” said McBryde.

“It showed in the summer with Aaron Shingler and Josh really stepping up to the mark. They both deserve an opportunity on the back of strong performances not only in the summer, but last season and again this season.

“It will be interesting to see how they work with Taulupe Faletau in the back-row and Sam Cross has made an impression in the first two weeks.

“It is always nice to win and we want to get that scalp we have been looking for.”
