Competitions review launched

The Welsh Rugby Union has launched an in-depth review into all performance competitions beneath regional level including the Principality Premiership, the National Championship and all competitions those clubs and players participate in.

The Union has appointed a team of independent experts to conduct the review along with running a series of workshops with representatives of all areas of the game at Premiership and Championship level including club officials coaches, players and referees. WRU participation and performance staff have also been asked to contribute including the National Management Team plus regional staff, Board members and independent individuals.

A steering group comprised of representatives of a range of those areas of the game will review the findings following the workshops, surveys and various individual meetings and will make recommendations for the future competition landscape at this level.

WRU Head of Rugby Performance Geraint John said, “The purpose of the review is to provide clear insight from all involved in the game at the next level below the professional game in order to inform a wholly fit-for-purpose future competition structure that best supports the performance pathway through to the National Team.

“We want to be inclusive in identifying the optimum pathway to support the development of players but also coaches, referees and support staff to national level. It is important we canvass the opinions of all in order to understand any barriers to performance, participation and development that exist within the current competition structure and to support the financial sustainability of the premiership and championship clubs so we want as many responses to the survey as possible.”

The surveys will close on Friday 24 November and initial findings are expected to be presented to the steering group in the New Year.
