NPTC seeking some daylight

NPTC seeking some daylight

Neath Port Talbot College will get the chance to forge ahead of reigning champions Coleg Sir Gar, and take a major stride towards a play-off place in the Welsh Schools & Colleges League, if they can get back to winning ways at The Gnoll.

Despite last week’s 29-22 home defeat against second placed Ysgol Glantaf, which followed a 26-24 loss at Coleg Gwent in the previous round, NPTC are still in third place. That means they are two points ahead of Sir Gar, who have a game in hand.

In order to stay in the top four they need to pull out all the stops and put some daylight between themselves and Sir Gar. They have two more matches to play, away to Bridgend College and home against Llandovery College in the final round.

Sir Gar have recovered from their 52-20 defeat at top of the table Coleg Y Cymoedd at the end of October and posted two big wins on the road since then – 48-8 at Llandovery College and 53-13 at Coleg Llandrillo. Their final three fixtures in January see them host Pembrokeshire Colleges and Gower College and travel to Whitchurch HS.

Last week’s 21-15 win by Coleg Gwent over Coleg Y Cymoedd at Sardis Road brought Matthew Jones’ side rushing into the final equation as they made it three wins in a row in November. They currently sit in fourth place on the same points (31) as NPTC, but with a vital game in hand.

They head to bottom-but-one Bridgend College in Round 10 and end their league campaign with a Dragons regional derby against Newport HS next Tuesday, another home tie against basement side Llandovery College and then a vital trip to Glantaf in the final round.

Glantaf, coached by Cardiff RFC full back Llwyarch Ap Myrddin, have a massive month in January when they host both Coleg Y Cymoedd and Coleg Gwent in fixtures that could have a huge bearing on not only who has home advantage in the semi-finals, but also who makes the top four. They head to Llandovery College this week.
