Having picked up a hard-fought win against bottom of the table Neath last weekend, Dale McIntosh’s men host Llandovery and RGC 1404 at The Wern in the space of six days. If they can win those two games then they could have even clearer daylight at the top of the table.
They currently lead Carmarthen Quins by three points, but with a game in hand. RGC 1404 are currently fourth, but having played one game less than the Ironmen, while the Drovers are seventh, but have only lost once in their six outings to date.
It all adds up to a vital week in the topsy-turvy run in to the title in the Premiership. Having seen off Ebbw Vale at home last weekend, the Quins head to Bridgend on Saturday.
Newport lost 24-19 at Llandovery at the weekend and will be looking to bounce back this week when they host Swansea tomorrow. Cardiff made it five wins in a row with their bonus-point, 39-7 triumph at Bargoed, but head coach Steve Law knows the acid test will come against RGC 1404.
“This will be another massive game for us. Following another very good performance on Friday this will be yet another step up,” said Law.
“It has been a challenging couple of weeks and especially this weekend having to play two games in four days, but the squad are in a good place at the moment. We will need to be at the top of our game though if we want to make it six in a row.”
RGC 1404 hit back after their shock defeat at Llanelli with an eight try romp at home against Cross Keys to get back on track.
