Nant Conwy doing it for North Wales

Nant Conwy head coach Kevin Thomas is dreaming of double glory as his team prepare to grace the home of Welsh rugby on Sunday.

Conwy take on Brynmawr at Principality Stadium in the WRU National Plate final.

Thomas’ side sit top of National League 1 North with a game in hand and look set to take home that domestic title after losing just twice all season.

Before that victory is confirmed, there is first the matter of a domestic final to deal with.

“It’s massive for the whole club and North Wales as a whole. We’re a small club and for our young players to get the chance to play at Principality Stadium is a dream come true,” said Thomas.

“I’m sure there will be a lot of nerves because it’s a big stage on which to play.

“What we’ve decided to do is travel down on Saturday morning and take the boys to watch Judgement Day so they can get used to the atmosphere in the stadium.

“We’ll know we’re playing there the next day – albeit with a much smaller crowd – and it will be a chance for them to look around and hopefully it will mean we’re not overawed by the occasion on the day.

“After Judgement Day we’ll go back to Bridgend which is where we’re staying and hopefully the boys will have a good night’s sleep.”

Conwy will face an impressive Brynmawr side, but with 20 of their 23 squad for the final having come through the club’s ranks, the men from North Wales are a proud bunch.

“We are a young side and we came so close in the league last year by finishing second. It was hard to accept that we were so close, but so far away from winning silverware, but this year we are more experienced and we are much better at closing games out,” Thomas said.

“We’ve got two strong squads and what has made a real difference to our first team this season is we’ve had 30 players training regularly on a Tuesday night. We’ve had plenty of competition for places and that’s been a huge part of why we’ve been successful.

“RGC are seen as the region of North Wales and they get plenty of coverage and rightly so. Hopefully if we can win on Sunday we can get some of the limelight. It would be great for rugby in North Wales as it would show the strength in depth at the clubs there.”

Looking ahead to the final, Thomas hopes his young fly-half Arthur Lennon can prove a key man.

The 20-year-old has scored 23 tries and 371 points in a stunning season to date.

“Arthur is one of those players people either love or hate. But he’s got a lot of skill, talent and pace and he has really stepped up this year after coming through the youth system. He has also stuck to the game plan well,” Thomas said.

“He still gets the occasional telling off, but he’s so talented I don’t want to suppress that. He’s been training with RGC this season and the only thing holding him back is his size, but that will come.”

Thomas continued: “We’ve not seen Brynmawr play this season, all we know is what we’ve been told of them and they have a lot of players from Ebbw Vale. They’re very experienced, have a huge pack, and we are the underdogs because they are a very strong team who are flying in the league.

“It’s going to be a big battle up front and maybe we are a little light in the pack, but we are hoping we can give them a game out wide.

“We might struggle initially, but I’ve noticed games at the Principality Stadium can see teams tire after the 60-minute mark. That might happen to them, but it will still take a massive effort to win.

“We said at the start of the season we have to win the league after we threw it away last season. We won’t count our chickens, but if we could win the double it would be just massive.

“It would rubber-stamp how hard we’ve worked this year and would show we can now compete with the sides in South Wales. For years they were stronger than us, but we’re more comfortable playing against them at that level now and if we were to win I’m sure the celebrations would last all week.”
