Luke Rees hopes Brynmawr can complete the first half of what could yet be a dream season and claim glory in the WRU National Plate against Nant Conwy.

Brynmawr take to the home of Welsh rugby looking for glory against the men from north Wales with their game one of three to take place on WRU Finals Day.

The Gwent outfit are also on track for trophy glory in WRU League 1 East, but first comes the Plate final with a Nant Conwy side who are determined to cause an upset.

“The club is buzzing for it. The whole place has a real community feel about it and every player, supporter, back-room team member and whoever can’t wait for the big day,” Rees said.

“The players are the lucky ones who will take to the field, but we’ve got so many people behind us.

“Things haven’t been easy for us either on or off the field. We’ve had a couple of tough seasons so to get to the Principality Stadium in front of all our fans is huge.

“We’ve seen the team struggle with relegation and narrowly avoid the drop. I was a youth player then and now I’m in the first team and it’s an incredible opportunity for us to step up.

“We’ve really focused on improving as a team and this is testament to what we’ve done as a squad.”

With the like of former Ebbw Vale skipper Damien Hudd in their side, Brynmawr have plenty of experience to call on and are favourites to come out on top.

Rees added: “Winning is always a great feeling to have, but we’re going to enjoy the day and we’re grateful for the opportunity.

“It’s all on us and we’ve got to focus on putting a performance in for 80 minutes and then the result will take care of itself.

“We’ll focus on the cup this week, but we’ve still got some important league games to come.

“A double could be on the cards, but we’re not getting too carried away. It could be a potentially great way to finish the season.”

Conwy travel south to Cardiff full of confidence themselves.

Their head coach Kevin Thomas plans to run Brynmawr’s formidable and gigantic pack around the field in a bid to come out on top.

“It’s massive for the whole club and North Wales as a whole. We’re a small club and for our young players to get the chance to play at Principality Stadium is a dream come true,” said Thomas.

“I’m sure there will be a lot of nerves because it’s a big stage on which to play.

“We are a young side and we came so close in the league last year by finishing second. It was hard to accept that we were so close, but so far away from winning silverware, but this year we are more experienced and we are much better at closing games out.

“We’ve got two strong squads and what has made a real difference to our first team this season is we’ve had 30 players training regularly on a Tuesday night. We’ve had plenty of competition for places and that’s been a huge part of why we’ve been successful.

“RGC are seen as the region of North Wales and they get plenty of coverage and rightly so.

“Hopefully if we can win on Sunday we can get some of the limelight. It would be great for rugby in North Wales as it would show the strength in depth at the clubs there.”
