Nant Conwy end title drought

Glyn Evans admitted he was relieved to see Nant Conwy reclaim the Division One North title and end Pwllheli’s dominance.

Nant Conwy’s last league trophy came five years ago with Pwllheli winning the league for the past three years and Bala prevailing in 2014.

But Nant Conwy’s 71-26 win over Llangefni ensured they claimed top spot once again. The reliable Arthur Lennon was at the heart of the victory with two tries and eight conversions. Jack Moriarty was also at the double while Carwyn ap Myrddin bagged a hat-trick.

Carwyn Ellis, Gethin Vaughan, Guto Dafydd and Sion Pringle added the other tries.

“We’ve been second for the last few years and [always] missed out in the last few matches so it’s good this year to win it,” said club official Evans.

“We’ve been there or thereabouts in the last 10 years so actually winning it is partly relief.”

Nant Conwy opened the season with three wins but a defeat to Ruthin halted their charge.

However, they went on to win their remaining games, including both matches against previous champions Pwllheli, and Evans believes that is what made the difference.

“Pwllheli won it three years on the trot and we lost to them in the previous seasons,” he said. “This year we beat Pwllheli twice, home and away. [It was] definitely [key].”
