The Gwent club stormed to 16 wins from 18 matches to to be crowned Division Three East C kings and mark the most successful season in their history.

It is also reward for the hard work put in over the past three seasons, instigated by head coach Chris Cornford along with fellow coaches Richard Jones, Mike Griffiths and Llyr Davies.

“Chris has done wonders for the club,” said secretary Stuart Jones. “He brought a few in with him but a lot of the players were already with us.

“They’ve been building step by step and it’s not just the first team he’s been developing, it’s the minis and juniors as well – putting in extra time to develop the coaches.”

Whitehead finished three points clear of rivals New Panteg, first cementing promotion with a 58-0 hammering of Trefil on April 28 before going on to secure the title with a 26-19 home defeat of Trinant on May 5.

Their only two defeats came at New Panteg in September and at Beaufort in January although they took a losing bonus point from both.

“The aim was to gain promotion but to win the league was great,” added Jones. “Everyone is over the moon and Chris is looking for promotion again next season.”

Jones picked out back-rower Josh Channing as well as captain Tom Blacker as his standout player picks of the season.

“They’ve both been outstanding every game and never fail to put a performance in,” he added.
