Emlyn trio talk of the town

Emlyn trio talk of the town

The Dragons were rightly proud at having three members of their 2017/18 squad starting for Wales in their awesome win over Argentina, but just think how the members of Newcastle Emlyn felt seeing three of their home grown products taking centre stage in San Juan.

It is a remarkable achievement for a club that was only born in 1977. Scott Williams now boasts 56 caps, Gareth Davies has reached 33 and when Josh Turnbull came off the bench he made his ninth international appearance.

No doubt the talented trio will be top of the agenda at the club’s AGM on Tuesday night (12 June), along with ways to try to progress a few more players through from the thriving junior section into the Scarlets’ regional set-up. Last season’s Newcastle Emlyn Youth team won 11 of their 15 fixtures, while the 1st XV held onto their WRU National Championship status with an eighth place finish.

The club was full on Saturday night to watch the game and there is extra excitement among the senior squad given that Turnbull is going to be joining the coaching team for next season.

“To be fair to all the boys they have never forgotten their roots. We see a lot of all of them and we are all incredibly proud of their achievements,” said 1st XV team manager Kevin Jones.

“Josh is coming back to help out with the coaching next season and that is a massive boost for us. We had a reasonable season in the WRU National Championship, but we’re hoping to do even better in what will be our fourth season this winter.

“Scott’s brother, Alex, is out 1st XV captain and it is great for all out juniors to know that three players in the Wales team came from the same team as they are currently playing for. It shows you can go all the way from Newcastle Emlyn to the top of the world game.”
