Ystrad Rhondda chairman Adrian Griffiths didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when he saw the first fixture for his newly promoted side in the WRU National Championship.

Proud to have won the Division 1 East Central title last season, and then beaten Brynmawr in the play-offs to gain a place in the Championship, Ystrad then found themselves drawn to play reigning champions Pontypool on the opening weekend.

Pooler have lost only once in the Championship over the past two season and went through last season unbeaten. The new campaign is even more vital to them, as the champions will get the chance to play-off for a place in the Principality Premiership.

But with the weather looking promising, and the Ystrad coaches having a full strength squad to pick from, maybe 1 September is the day to cause an upset against the outstanding favourites for a hat-trick of titles.

“We are all ready for it and what a way to kick-off the season. Getting Pontypool first up is probably good for us because they will know very little about us,” said Griffiths.

“We certainly know all about them and their reputation. They will be bringing a bit contingent with them and we are looking forward to giving them a very warm reception both on and off the pitch.

“We had a great end to last season by beating Brynmawr in the play-offs. We demolished them at home and then went up there and beat them against all the odds.

“What the game against Pontypool will do is let the players and coaches know what level they have to get to this season in the Championship. We’v e got a fully fit squad and we’re also delighted to have had outside half Corey Shephard and No 8 Liam Davies return to us from Cross Keys.”

The last time the two clubs met at Ystrad was in a league game in Division 1 East at the start of the 2006/07 season. On that occasion Pontypool were happy to leave with an 11-9 victory.

The action kicks-off in all the other WRU National League programmes this weekend, with promotion in everyone club’s sights as they dream of success and silverware.
